Hair-ducation: Hair Growth Support

On my quest to learn more about growing healthy hair, I've stumbled upon a universe of information. I will attempt to share the information specific to growing and maintaining healthy hair between visits/consultations with your professional hair care provider. I should provide some overview first.

The Hair Growth Cycle
Each hair on our heads has its own cycle. The cycle mainly has three phases: Growth-Transition, Rest/Sleep and Re-growth/Shed. The cycle can last anywhere from two to six years. Obviously, each hair starts growing at different times; otherwise, we would all loose a head-full of hair simultaneously (thank goodness that's not the case).

Hair Catalysts & Facilitators
The number one facilitator for growing hair, is blood circulation. In simple terms, healthy blood circulation nourishes the hairs on our heads (and other organs). Of course, this means we need to have (say it with me) HEALTHY BODIES...I'm looking down now. This resonates with me on so many levels *sigh* but it is an inconvenient truth.

Since our hair is not living, but a protein-rich byproduct of cellular activity, we must feed and nourish our bodies with vitamins [and foods containing these vitamins] that support overall health. For hair, we should use the following:

My Hair Food List
Vitamin A
Vitamins B-2, -3, -5, -6, -9 and -12
Vitamin C
Vitamin E
Vitamin H (biotin)
MSM

In addition to implementing and maintaining our hair lifestyle, we should also want to live the healthiest lifestyle possible. If you already participate in a fitness regimen that includes cardio, incorporate Pilates or yoga to facilitate flexibility and support healthy blood circulation. I need to get on the ball!

Other Fun Facts

  1. Hair grows approximately 0.3mm daily and up to nine inches annually.
  2. Of the approximately 5 million hairs on our body, we all have anywhere from 100,000 to 150,000 strands of hair on our heads.
  3. On a daily basis, we shed 50 - 100 hairs.
  4. Hair grows slightly faster in warmer climates. This is because the blood is needed to keep our other organs warm in cold environments. This could be a good reason for me to relocate to [hmmm....] the Caribbean (lol)!

So...

Taking all of these things into consideration, my goal will be to prevent shedding (as much as possible), maintain nourishment of hair during the growth and rest phases of the hair-growth cycle and employ a healthy lifestyle (incorporating the foods and activities necessary for a healthier me and healthier head of hair).
